Southwold in Suffolk is a good location for landscape photographers. The pier is a great feature for seascape photography, especially for long exposures. The sea defences and pier provide strong elements for minimalist compositions with the water smoothed out. In our Southwold Seascapes workshop we will be working near the pier to make the most of it and the surrounding shoreline. We will look at different ways to use water in our photos. You will be able to try your hand at long exposures whether using filters or in the low light of the evening. Your tutor Joe Lenton has produced international award-winning images at this location and will be sharing his techniques and tips with you.
You will need to bring a camera (DSLR or similar) that allows you to control the shutter speed, ISO and aperture manually. Don’t worry if you aren’t used to Manual mode as everything will be explained. An ideal lens would be around 18mm or wider (at least on a crop sensor camera – i.e. not full frame). You will need a tripod to work from so please let us know as soon as possible if you may need to borrow one. If you have any questions about the suitability of your kit or your skill level please do get in touch before booking. A cable shutter release is a big help for seascape photography. If you have any filters do bring them along. If you have an eyepiece cover then it may be useful to have that with you as well.
The group is limited to 6 pre-booked participants. This means that everyone has time to ask questions one to one with the tutor. We will be shooting into sunset as the light drops. Southwold looks East out to sea so we won’t be likely to have the sun directly in the photos. If you wish to shoot towards the sun then this can be done from the end of the pier looking back towards the shore as illustrated in the image below.
There is a large pay and display car park next to the pier. Other parking may be available elsewhere in the town. Please bring change for parking. If the weather is bad we will reschedule the session. Please ensure that we have a current phone number (preferably mobile) so that we can get in touch with you in case of any changes to arrangements. An email will be sent out a few days prior to the workshop with details of when and where to meet. If you haven’t heard from us please get in touch. We obviously cannot guarantee a stunning sunset but we hope for a beautiful sky! This is a good opportunity to advance your landscape photography skills and enjoy the company of other photographers.
