Film Noir Photography Workshop

Film Noir Photography Training - sample image Gavin Bromley-3Is he a detective or a gangster? Tell your own story in Film Noir style with exciting dramatic lighting. In this specialist workshop we will be exploring high contrast, controlled lighting to create a modern twist on film noir. We will be shooting with the intention of converting the images to black and white. Our model on the day is local male actor Gavin Bromley. He will help us to create images that tell a story and create intrigue and mood. Gavin is featured in the images on this page. Several of these were created on the last workshop. They are indicative of the sort of thing we will be doing in the Film Noir photography workshop.

You will discover how to create the precise look you want with various light shaping modifiers. You will learn how to control light very precisely using various snoots and grids. Some lighting setups will be very simple, using just one light. Others will be more complex with multiple flashes. Lighting equipment will be provided for you on the day so you do not need to bring your own. Our triggers work with cameras with a standard hotshoe (eg. Nikon, Canon). Mid range to telephoto lenses will work best (primes or zoom).

We will be working in Manual mode to enable us to control shutter speed, ISO and aperture. If you have any doubt about the suitability of your equipment or skill level please do contact us before booking. You don’t need to be highly proficient in using Manual mode as full explanations will be given. It would help if you have done some portrait photography before, preferably also including some work with studio lighting.
