Long exposure photography workshop - Cromer PierLong exposure photography is a trendy way to photograph water and seascapes in particular. It can drastically change the mood of a scene. From the chaos of crashing waves you can create a tranquil, almost meditative image. In this workshop we will look at controlling the appearance of water in seascape images. We will begin by gradually softening the waves to create a smoother appearance. This will also use the outgoing water to create streaking patterns on the beach. Then, we will soften the water further until the waves disappear and the shoreline become more like a mist. These are techniques that can elevate your landscape photography to the next level. There will be an opportunity to try some of the filters that we sometimes use. The lower light levels as we approach and go beyond sunset will also enable longer exposures without the need for filters.

You will need to bring your camera and a tripod to keep it steady. If you don’t have a tripod, please let us know ASAP as we do have a spare that can be borrowed on the night. Ideally you will have a wide to ultrawide lens – something in the region of 12-24mm. This is not essential and you can work with kit lenses (18-55mm) as well. If you are in any doubt about the suitability of your kit please do ask before booking. If you have your own filters (ND filters, polariser, graduated filters) then please do bring them along. You can get advice about filters if you are considering purchasing some. A cable shutter release makes things a lot easier and if you are using a DSLR it would be a good idea to bring your eyepiece cover too.

You don’t need a lot of experience in order to attend this workshop. Ideally you will be familiar with shooting in Aperture Priority mode and perhaps Manual mode. There is a little walking involved as we do go to a couple of locations on the beach and possibly also up onto the pier so please bear that in mind if you have mobility issues.

Our group is a maximum of 6 participants so that everyone has plenty of opportunity to ask questions and have personal instruction. Your tutor has won numerous Gold award in international competitions for his long exposure landscape photography. He is experienced in teaching and coaching photographers of all levels from beginners to professionals.
